On 18th-20th of November 2015, UCSIA organizes the international academic workshop Rituals, Markets and Redemption at the University of Antwerp, Belgium.

The general topic aim of the workshop is to reflect on the tensions between the sacred and the profane, the individualist and the collective, the material and immaterial aspects of rituals in a market-oriented global context. The academic papers will be gathered via an open call for papers and should discuss research on one of the 5 perspectives:

  • Rituals and consumerism
  • The material side of rituals
  • Rituals and their social functioning
  • Rituals and economic organization
  • Rituals and property

This academic workshop consists of a two-day international meeting (preceded by a public opening lecture) with specialized lectures, presentations and debates by invited senior and junior scholars. The aim is to offer a platform to scholars to present their research on the topic and exchange their ideas on research findings. Such a meeting may open up new multidisciplinary horizons to think about the topic.

Researchers, doctoral students and other experts are welcome to submit their application until 5th of July 2015. Candidates should send in the completed submission form, accompanied by a short academic curriculum vitae and an outline of the proposed paper. The decision of the selection committee will be communicated by mid-July 2015 the latest. Further details and the online application form are available at http://www.ucsia.org/main.aspx?c=*UCSIAENG2&n=121334.

Selected participants will present their papers in a panel session (20 minutes in English). A selection of papers presented at the workshop will be considered for publication.

Thanking you in advance for your interest and for the wider dissemination of this information, we remain at your disposal for all further questions.
